Story from Bethany Collier

The typographic elements on the chair were created by listening to Bethany’s story and indexing all the words she used that related to love, comfort, support, and this feeling of strength in sisterhood. The words were then used to create unique typographic glyphs, each comprised of the individual letters.

Two themes were very apparent when listening Bethany’s story. The theme of sisterhood, and strength within unity rose from this idea that even though an individual may not see themselves as strong on their own, they can be strong by virtue of the love that others give them.

The second theme was informed by the place her story was originally told: a retreat for her church. Church retreats are a place for peace, and meditation. Mandala’s are a beautiful form of expression, and their use as a meditative and spiritual practice in the east informed my choice of color, as well as layout.
